This one is 23 today. Which is just ridiculous.
My mom just posted this photo on Facebook of my brother and me on an Easter morning some decades ago, and of course she gave us fruit in our baskets instead of candy. Look how excited I am! Grapes and strawberries! I didn’t have refined sugar until I was about seven and then I wanted it ALLLLL.
John Clang photographed far-apart family members together, using Skype and a projector.
via NY Times Magazine:
Clang, who is based in New York, tried this with his own family first, then used the Internet, embassies and recommendations from friends to track down other Singaporean families with members there and in far-flung places. Those in Singapore stood before their webcam-enabled computers and called their distant relatives on Skype. In these various locations, Clang projected the Skype image onto a wall and then photographed the callers together with their flesh-and- blood kin. No Photoshop was needed, and the entire process is simple enough for people everywhere to take advantage of in migratory times. ‘‘It bridges the gap between the two families that are apart,’’ Clang says.
Happy birthday to my best friend, my other brain, my baby sister. May 22 treat you better than 21 did. (If it doesn’t, just let me know and I’ll punch it in the throat.) I love you, babe!
My mom found this polaroid somewhere recently and thought I should have it. Look at my stupid little hat. I don’t remember my swimsuit but I remember hers. White and strapless - not a mom swimsuit at all. I learned later that she struggled with being an outsider here, but even as a kid I was always proud of how she didn’t look or act or sound like - wasn’t like - the other moms.

I’m pretty sure my sister is an alien, since nothing human is this adorable.
Happy birthday, big brother. (photo by little sister)
My mom was in the paper! I’m so proud of her.
(Don’t start on the stupid headline and sub-head, or the fact that the story seems to have been written by a fifth grader. Still proud.)
Leaving to spend a few days with the extended family in Charleston and Kiawah Island, so there may be some radio silence around here. You never know if the wifi at the hotel will be shitty, or whether we will all kill each other in a brutal hurricane of political disagreements, long-festering childhood resentment, undiagnosed psychiatric disorders, and heavy drinking. (Don’t worry: I’m a dab hand with a broken bottle.) It’s also possible I will just snuggle up on the hotel bed with the laptop after dinner. Either way, have a great weekend!
I love my momma. (Taken with Instagram at Blue Ridge BBQ & Music Festival)
You might think your family is as cute as mine, but you would be wrong.
I love finding pictures of my mom’s life in her 20s.
That’s me in the backpack with my beautiful mom!
My brother made a movie-trailer-style video about our cousin playing Little League. It’s awesome (and only 68 seconds). You should watch it.
