Life on Mars? (David Bowie cover) - Seu Jorge

(via sometimesagreatnotion)

#1 - The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou

Screenprint available 15th October at www.SecretlySwedish.com

A Serious Man - With the exception of O Brother, Where Art Thou?, I have always had to watch Coen Bros. movies more than once in order to get into them, and more often than not, they then become some of my favorites. So even though I was nonplussed by this one, I’m withholding judgement until another go-round.

The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou - A rewatch, so does it count? Every time I watch it, there are things I like more and things I like less about it. Bill Murray, though, is always a delight. And hey, what is Wes Anderson’s problem with dads? They’re all terrible!

Sherlock Holmes - This was weeeeeiiiird. I mean, you can’t not like RDJ, but otherwise, shit just felt out of place. And I can. not. bear when characters stand around at the climax and explain how everything happened. Stop it.

I Heart Huckabees - Another rewatch, but it’s been years and I’m pretty sure I was drunk the first time? Anyway, I really liked it. Nice job, everyone!

The Invention of Lying - Kind of funny, but broad. I thought the no lying = no religion plotline was pretty heavy-handed, but I don’t know what else I expected from Ricky “Get it? GET IT?” Gervais.

Pirate Radio/The Boat That Rocked - Really liked it! You may have noticed. Plus now I’m nursing a serious crush on Chris O’Dowd. He’s so tall and Irish and, according to IMDB (reliable!), has a collection of chocolate bar wrappers, so he’s a weirdo too, but probably not the scary kind. This guy knows what I’m talking about.

“The Longest Time” - Billy Joel

Wes Anderson: My brothers and I would perform this song in the family living room to great effect. Thankfully, there were no cameras running.

“When I Live My Dream” - David Bowie

WA: In its original version

“Summer Day” - Coconut Records ft. Zooey Deschanel

WA: Classic Coconut Records. A beautiful duet.

“The First Cut Is The Deepest” (Cat Stevens cover) - Buva

WA: We were very lucky to be able to use two great Cat Stevens songs in Rushmore. Here is a particular favorite of Randy Poster’s (music supervisor on The Darjeeling Limited) from early in Stevens’ career.

“Dishes” - Pulp

WA: Jarvis Cocker is in my mind one of the most original voices and creative thinkers in these parts. He is not Jesus, but he has the same initials.

“Tive Razao” - Seu Jorge

“Gates of Steel (live Devo cover)” - Yo La Tengo

WA: Mark Mothersbaugh has created all the original music for my movies. This is one of my favorite Devo songs.

Alec Eiffel” - The Pixies

WA: I believe this song is about an architect.

“The Well and the Lighthouse” - Arcade Fire

WA: I have jumped on the bandwagon.

“Rally” - Phoenix

WA: While I have a known affinity for the music of the British Invasion, Phoenix makes a very strong argument for the oncoming French one.

“Yeah!” - Horace Silver

WA: There is a cue in Bottle Rocket that Mark Mothersbaugh wrote called ‘No Jazz’ (this was an edict from the studio). Horace Silver argues for the other side.

“Sweet Thing” - Van Morrison

WA: From one of the most enduring albums of recorded music, this song always overwhelms me. How many times I played it when I should have been doing my homework…

“Ceremony” - New Order

WA: We almost used this in The Life Aquatic, and sometimes when the wind is full I wish we did.

I love an excuse to make a playlist.

“Life on Mars” - Seu Jorge

Heart duly aching.

I first heard this on a mix CD a guy made me last year that also included “These Days” by Nico. I didn’t realize until reading rushmoreacademy’s post that most of the songs on that CD were from Wes Anderson movies. What a clever thing to do with a mix CD, and it completely went over my head. ::dumb::
