I dreamt an entire screenplay last night - as in, the dream was me writing a screenplay from cold open to closing credits, interrupted occasionally by full and vivid staging of individual scenes - despite my never having written nor really ever wanting to write a screenplay.

It was about an astronaut who gets stranded on the moon and cobbles together enough of her crashed ship to send messages back to earth asking for help, where they’re received as messages from God and cause a panic.

It’s probably a good thing I don’t want to be a screenwriter.

“We still really want this idea of good and bad and good and evil and it’s really, I think, hard to let go of that. Ambiguity gets interpreted and misinterpreted and people have to feel like there’s someone in a movie to either side with or despise, and my favorite documentary filmmaker, Allan King, used to say ‘It’s not just bad for movies to pick a hero and a villain or try to paint a portrait of good or evil; you’re actually doing active harm in the world by perpetrating that notion. Just indulging the idea that there is such a thing as good or bad people as opposed to a whole spectrum of ambiguity.’ So I feel very conscious about that when I make a film, that nobody’s a hero and nobody’s a villain. My experience of human beings is that… that we’re complicated people.”

When the film was released we made ‘Foree Electric’ badges for all the directors and writers who gave us press quotes – George A. Romero, Sam Raimi, Guillermo Del Toro, Peter Jackson, Stephen King, Robert Rodriguez and Quentin Tarantino. So there was a great batch of name tags made that read simply George, Sam, Guillermo, Peter, Stephen, Robert & Quentin. They were all ranked as assistant manager. George wore his for the entire ‘Land Of The Dead’ shoot.

Went to see Iron Man 3 today (it was fine) and noticed on my way out that the theater was selling 1-second strips of actual film from the trailers for Oz the Great and Powerful (who cares) and Monsters, Inc. (my favorite Pixar of all time). Be still my heart.

[T]here was a moment when I was writing Upstream Color where I fell so hard for what it was becoming that I couldn’t think of anything else.

It really started with this notion of personal identity. […] And I think I had this view that, if you could strip away all that subjectivity, strip away everything you’d learned or that you’d been taught or accumulated, that maybe underneath would be this core—that would be plurality of thought, that would be the ability to be malleable to circumstances instead of having a predefined understanding of them. Eventually [it] lead to the idea that maybe there wasn’t anything inside, that maybe we are just an accumulation of these subjective key points of experience. That’s the bit that started to make this whole thing horrific, this idea that you’re not left with anything, that you’re just a lost consciousness in the world.

There are people I might have loved had they gotten on the airplane or run down the street after me or called me up drunk at four in the morning because they need to tell me right now and because they cannot regret this and I always thought I’d be the only one doing crazy things for people who would never give enough of a fuck to do it back or to act like idiots or be entirely vulnerable and honest and making someone fall in love with you is easy and flying 3000 miles on four days notice because you can’t just sit there and do nothing and breathe into telephones is not everyone’s idea of love but it is the way I can recognize it because that is what I do. I had remarked a couple of months ago that Tumblr seemed to be focusing only on new features and completely ignoring longstanding bugs. I never posted this but I sort of thought the reason why they were doing this was so they could sell a larger base of users to a prospective buyer. I wonder if I was right.
